It is a fast-paced engrossing story that I found hard to put down. I loved how the author shared Ulbricht’s thought process on the daily decisions he made about the Silk Road, which was driven by his hardcore libertarian philosophy. I’ve definitely never thought about trying to apply a political philosophy to something like selling human organs. Regardless of whether I agreed with his arguments, Ulbricht’s musings sparked my curiosity and led me on more than one internet rabbit hole of researching libertarian views. But what I enjoyed the most was that even though Ross Ulbricht was not talked to for this book, I feel like I know and understand the so-called mastermind behind Silk Road for having read it. His beliefs, trials and tribulations were woven together with such coherency that even though I knew how this story played out, I wanted him to triumph.
Most notably, Ulbricht left a comment on a programming forum using a handle easily linkable to his real gmail account. Slate called it “the bonehead mistake that brought down an online drug-dealing empire.” Freedom Hosting was dismantled as part of an international child porn investigation and its alleged owner arrested in Ireland. Because Freedom Hosting was so popular, huge swaths of the Dark Net went black, including Tormail, the favorite mode of communication for Silk Road dealers. With Freedom Hosting gone, the Dark Net was immediately diminished. Popular Underground Drug Market Shuts Down for ‘Security Reasons’ It just became a little harder to buy drugs online.

Otherwise it’s like stealing precious jewelry or pieces of art and saying ‘no worries I will give you money back instead’. If Bitcoin is too high of a value right now, then he should be able to have a wait, to buy & return some more later, but he should still engage to return the stolen Bitcoin over time, atleast little by little. If at the time of theft you had intended to steal $10,000 worth of gold bar you couldn’t possibly predict that its value would rise to $20,000. If you steal for example a gold bar worth $10,000 at that time, even if gold value rises to make it now worth $20,000 you shouldn’t be worse off. Simply put, the perpetator, James Zhong, who was just 22 years old at the time, started with between 200 and 2000 Bitcoins, and by quickly ended up with more than BTC 50,000.
As the DOJ wryly notes, Zhong’s BTC stash was the biggest cryptocurrency amount ever recovered in a law enforcement operation, based on rates at the time of the bust, though now it’s considered only second-best. That’s not to say that the entire deep web consists of these difficult-to-find websites. Many regular websites now also offer onion addresses (basically the .com or .net of the deep net) you can use to access said sites through the deep web, with examples ranging from DuckDuckGo to ProPublica and even social media sites like Facebook. The fundamental purpose of the deep web is to provide a way for people to browse the internet and host websites without the potential for being tracked or monitored.

Based on data from 3 February 2012 to 24 July 2012, an estimated $15 million in transactions were made annually on Silk Road. Twelve months later, Nicolas Christin, the study’s author, said in an interview that a major increase in volume to “somewhere between $30 million and $45 million” would not surprise him. Initially there were a limited number of new seller accounts available; new sellers had to purchase an account in an auction.

It recreated the original site’s setup and promised improved security. The new DPR took the precaution of distributing encrypted copies of the site’s source code to allow the site to be quickly recreated in the event of another shutdown. “Busts will just make sure it’s way more decentralized in 1-2 years, with even more users because of all the press lol,” he wrote. “Tor Hidden Services are pretty much abandoned by the Tor Project, there have been studies pointing out systemic design flaws and things are starting to heat up with the whole alleged Freedom Hosting bust,” he wrote.
Silk Road, regarded as the first darknet market, was launched in 2011 and eventually shut down by the FBI in 2013. It was founded by Ross William Ulbricht, who is now serving a life sentence in prison for his role in Silk Road. After some incredible and persistent desk-jockey sleuthing, Ulbricht, who used the online nickname “Dread Pirate Roberts”, was eventually caught logged into the site from a public library.

Silk Road, accessed anonymously by users on the dark web, brought in approximately $1 billion in sales, according to investigators, with Ulbricht making millions by taking a cut of each transaction. The dark web refers to encrypted online content that is not indexed on conventional search engines.

If such wallet addresses are linked to registered and verified accounts, then it is possible to link them to real identities. Named after the historical trading routes introduced by the Han Dynasty, the dark net market used an alternative payment system (Bitcoin!) and developed a well-structured platform that included a seller review system, an escrow service and a private messaging feature. The platform rose to prominence, and in a little over two years of operations, it had over 1 million user accounts Drugs reportedly accounted for 70% of the goods sold on Silk Road. Silk Road continued to grow, and with its growth, came continued problems.
